Creating a poster and vinyl designs for an upcoming event featuring the works of Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders, London Symphonic Orchestra, I aim to highlight the creative talents of undiscovered artists in the realm of instrumental music.
Sam Shepherd, known by his stage name Floating Points, is a British DJ, electronic music producer and musician. Floating Points said that he draws inspiration from classical, jazz, electronic music and even Brazilian popular music.
Pharoah Sanders was an American jazz saxophonist. He possesses one of the most distinctive tenor saxophone sounds in jazz. Rich in harmonies, Sanders’ sound can sound very lively and harsh.
The London Symphony Orchestra is a British symphony orchestra based in London. Founded in 1904, the LSO is the oldest of London’s symphony orchestras.
As for the creative process, I created various mark-making while listening to the album, and spent a long time exploring it according to the mood of the album using various tools and materials. In keeping with the mood of the album, paint was used to create an atmosphere of floating somewhere, expressing the appearance of various instruments building up layers to create music. Using soft yet delicate typography, each letter was expressed so that it floats.
Through this, I created a visual aesthetic that catches the viewer's eye with a design that is minimalistic yet soft yet shows unique characteristics with strong tension. The layers of beautiful colors of paint give a sense of depth and help viewers empathize more with the music.
Through this project, I learned the delicate balance of harmony in both music and visual storytelling. A creative process characterized by patience and persistence transferred the layers of the album's composition onto the canvas, using typography and minimalist design to deepen the connection between the viewer and the music. The project highlighted the limitless nature of creativity – a journey that interweaves academic disciplines and creates a holistic sensory experience for the audience.
